Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) Award 2023: Mary Kroetz
Institution: Bellarmine University
Department: Biology
Rank: Assistant Professor
Project Title: Embedding CUREs in the life sciences with support from peer learning facilitators
About the Project: We are implementing a Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) in Genetics at Bellarmine University. In this course, students will use CRISPR to edit the genome of the C. elegans model system. Students will design the constructs needed for the CRISPR genomic edit, screen and verify animals for the intended edit, and characterize the outcome of the genomic edit. We are using this lab as a pilot to integrate more CUREs into additional lab courses at Bellarmine.
Intended Outcomes: The intended outcomes of this project are two-fold. We hope to generate a better understanding of the genes that direct organogenesis of the gonad in C. elegans while simultaneously incorporating undergraduate genetics students in the research process.
How funding from KY INBRE helps accomplish these goals: The funds will be used to hire previously successful students to help the current round of students carry out the research. Additionally, funds will be used to purchase needed equipment.
Outside of the Lab/Classroom: I enjoy hiking, and cooking and eating elaborate meals.
